A week of news: GIMP 2.8 is out, we have again a modern stable version of GIMP. Gratulation to the developers, this was good and hard work. But instead of relaxing a bit they threw at the same moment Version 2.9 into the world. High bit depth, not only the 16 bits everybody wanted, 32 bits integer and floating point modes are suddenly available. But be aware, this is a field of bugs and crashes, don’t expect any productive results yet.
In a first look at 2.8 I show the shiny new brushes, explain how to use the new sliders and the tagging system for brushes, gradients and patterns. For the lazy I add a bit of calculations in input fields.
Then nachbarnebenan takes you for a tour through 2.9, presenting the lossless operation of the layer stack and other stuff. But again, this is not for the faint at heart. If you want to compile 2.9 on Debian, here is a How To in our Wiki. (The link address says still 2.7, but it is 2.9….)

Error message-
Failed to connect to web-server/proxy-server for bypass transaction (Error 504)
Try it again, please. I have no problem and the logs show successful downloads.
Tried several times yesterday with the same result and again today. Tried save as from the link and get a 281 byte file, also tried a different box with the same result.
I have also tried to d/l previous episodes which I had d/l successfully when they came out and now get the error with them as well.
In case it was a chrome issue I also tried with firefox which gives the same error when trying to connect to apis.google.com during the d/l.
Other d/l from other sites work ok, though I have not tried mp4 d/l. Only thing left is perhaps Ubuntu upgrade to 11.4 has broken something again.
When I download the episode I get a file of 4.327 bytes. I used both IE and Chrome with the same result.
I cant get it to download either (from chrome or ie).
Please see my comment below, there seems to be a problem with the machine in Poland.
Downloading worked well at my home connection, so the problem is my work internet connection.
I suspect there is something strange happening on the Polish server (IP 212.33.90.253). You will have gotten the file from France (IP 94.23.46.181) at home.
I am crying for help to Marcin.
A workaround is to fix the IP for the France server in the hosts file.
Add the lines:
# French server for Meet the GIMP
94.23.46.181 dl.meetthegimp.org
You can find the location for that file here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_%28file%29#Location_in_the_file_system
Also nice to know when your name server is stopping to resolve some web sites out opf political or commercial reasons….
Both machines working again! Thanks to Marcin!
Correct, a ping confurmed that:

Thank you for the help, d/l does work ok now. Perhaps I was quick to blame ubuntu but they are so often to blame for breaking things with updates. I also hate having big brother decide what I can see online, I did not realise that Rolf was so subversive.
The governments here in Germany don’t have a spotless track record of keeping human rights. And living in Berlin keeps this in mind. I am about 2km away from the Stasi headquarters and not more than 5km from the Reichssicherheitshauptamt of the Gestapo of Heinrich Himmler.
And I doubt that other governments are much better….
wondering the printing tool is not good. I want to have a special format, but Gimp is printing what it want to print, another format?!
Ok, that’s a show idea.
I’ll explore that.
Oh, thats great, and i can learn something
Now it works. You must put in 600dpi for print issue and then the picture is o.k. But if you put in 300 dpi the picture is only the half!
But now on Mac Pages will break! Pages don’t work when Gimp 2.8 is installed??!!
Hi Rolf,
Great podcast! Looking forward to 2.10 / high bit depth
Cheers
Steve

Is there a way to watch these videos without having to download them? (E.g. Are any of them on YouTube, or Vimeo, or something like that?)
Thanks.
Yes, you can watch them here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/MeetGIMP
However I don’t know if all episodes are up yet and how good the quality is, as all I get is a one-frame-per-minute slowmo slideshow.
I appreciate your reply.
I checked one of the videos and the quality looks okay to me and it plays normally.
The most recent episode uploaded looks to be E130, but they look like they’re getting uploaded pretty quickly.
eppic is uploading all the videos to YouTube. They are organized in Playlists.
The current ones are all here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLE2BA40231638A648&feature=plcp
Hi.
) – it contains a typo though: http://blog.meetthegimp.orgfeed/ (slash missing)…
It looks like you set up a redirect for the old news feed URL of http://meetthegimp.org/feed/ to the new one (thanks
